Hi! I’m Eleanor, a scholar of medieval literature, feminism, and horror. I’m a literature professor, and I live in New York City. In the past few years—kind of in lockstep with COVID—I’ve realized that my three areas of expertise (medieval culture, feminism, and horror) have a shocking amount to say to each other. So I made this substack!
If you subscribe for free, you’ll receive my weekly posts (every Friday morning), which run about 2000-2500 words. Some of them are themed on a single film or work of horror; some are more abstractly theoretical, about the nature of horror and why we like it; some look at a cluster of horror films together or horror narratives together, to see the sparks fly.
So far, I’ve posted about Beowulf, The Green Knight, The Iliad, Gerald’s Game, Moon, Melancholia, Alien, The Witch, and Euripides’ The Bacchae. Coming soon are posts on Another Earth, medieval Icelandic zombies, Rosemary’s Baby, Repulsion, The Tenant (and Roman Polanski), Raw, Suspiria, The Exorcist, Psycho, and many more.
As a free subscriber, you’ll also have access to my full archive of prior publications. Signing up for free means you won’t have to worry about missing anything, becasue every new weekly post will go directly to your inbox.
If you sign up for a *paid* subscription, you’ll be able to leave comments, and I’ll take requests for future posts on particular films, books, or issues pertaining to feminism, horror, or the Middle Ages. And you will be supporting my ongoing research and professional development as a feminist, critic of American culture, and medievalist.
